Today was the second consecutive time I have been in the grocery store and someone has approached me for money. The first woman was walking around with a frozen pizza in her grocery cart asking for money to feed her kids. I told her I didn’t have any cash– which was true. But I’ll admit I was skeptical of her story. She was dressed in scrubs and had a decent wig on her head. So she was by no means broke down. When I returned to the grocery store today, I saw her sitting outside the same store with a bag with toilet paper in it and talking on her cell phone. Yeah, if you want a hustle like that to play out right, at least go to another store where no one recognizes you. So I go into the store and I’m minding my own business in the produce section and a different woman approaches me. She shows me a white band on her wrist, says she just got out of the hospital, has breast cancer and needs money to get home. Again, I have no cash. [ I LOVE my debit card.] But I’m thinking, there is no hospital or cancer clinic anywhere near this store, so how did you get here? I guess I look non-threatening and approachable. Maybe I need a button that says I’m no sucker.
